San Juan de la Pe\u00f1a walls have witnessed the birth of the Kingdom of Aragon and the passage of the Holy Grail.<\/p>\n<h3>FRENCH ROAD<\/h3>\n<p>The Aragonese part of the French Road lived its zenith in the Middle Ages, between 11th and 16th century. <strong>Santa Cristina hospital<\/strong> construction, one of the most important three at that time, and the fact that <strong>Jaca<\/strong> became the capital of Arag\u00f3n, made pilgrims to pick this route all over those years, known as <strong>Toulouse Road<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From <strong>Somport<\/strong> pass, at 1,640 m above sea level, starts this historic route crossing the Pyrenees and descending through <strong>Arag\u00f3n River valley<\/strong>. <strong>Jaca cathedral<\/strong>, <strong>Monastery of San Juan de la Pe\u00f1a<\/strong> and the Romanesque shrines <strong>Santa Mar\u00eda de Igu\u00e1cel<\/strong> and <strong>San Adri\u00e1n de Sasabe<\/strong>, and the village <strong>Santa Cruz de la Ser\u00f3s<\/strong> are some of the most beautiful examples.<\/p>\n<p>The villages which are crossed in the Aragonese stages along the French road to Santiago are Somport, Candanch\u00fa, Canfranc, Villan\u00faa, Castiello de Jaca, Jaca, Santa Cilia, Puente la Reina, Arr\u00e9s, Martes, Mianos, Artieda, Ruesta and Undu\u00e9s de Lerda.<\/p>\n<h3>Diversion from San Juan de la Pe\u00f1a to Santa Cruz de la Ser\u00f3s<\/h3>\n<p>There is a diversion of the \u2018Camino de Santiago\u2019 from Jaca to the monastery of San Juan de la Pe\u00f1a. It is the <a href=\"https:\/\/monasteriosanjuan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Mapa-GR-65-3-2.pdf\"><strong>GR 65.3.2<\/strong><\/a> trail. It can be taken about 5 km past Jaca, crossing the Gas River bridge towards the village of Atar\u00e9s. In a simple 15-minute walk, you reach the Old Monastery and, from there, the route leads us through Santa Cruz de la Ser\u00f3s to find the main road again in Santa Cilia.<\/p>\n<p>They are a total of 24 kilometers where a progressive drop of nearly 500 meters must be bridged. The whole itinerary is beautiful and quiet, although the pilgrim should know that in some parts it is also somewhat hard. Without a doubt, it is worth it for the beauty of the landscape and the richness of the cultural heritage that the route offers along its way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagoporaragon.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Website of the Camino de Santiago through Aragon<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>CATALAN WAY<\/h3>\n<p>Another marvellous Santiago Road passing through San Juan de la Pe\u00f1a is the Catalan Way or Montserrat Way. Before reaching Aragon, it covers the monastery of Monserrat, Igualada, Cervera, T\u00e1rrega and Balaguer.<\/p>\n<p>In Aragon, it offers a large variety of possibilities.
